“Save the Children”, the most important humanitarian organization active on behalf of children at the world level, recently appealed to the European Union, asking it “to do more to eliminate child poverty”. Save the Children presented a report at the European Parliament, according to which there are over 600 million children in the world living in families whose income does not exceed one dollar per day. “One child out of four lives below the poverty threshold”. Save the Children asks the member states of the EU to increase their aid to the developing countries to 0.6% of GDP by 2009 and to 0.7% by 2013. The European Union, though it is the world’s leading donor, ought says the aid organization to make a greater commitment to supporting orphans, funding medical research and developing drugs to treat children. It should also contribute to remove tax burdens on education and health.
