Scotland: the value of the means of social communication” “

“The Church has long recognized that it has the duty to use the means of social communication and, in the words of John Paul II, ‘make every effort to tackle the challenges of the new media technologies and use them at the service of the truth of the Gospel'”, says Bishop Joseph Devine, chairman of the Social Communications Committee of the Catholic Church in Scotland, in a pastoral letter that was read out in all five hundred Scottish parishes on the occasion of the Day of Social Communications celebrated on 8 May. Referring to the media service provided by the Scottish Bishops’ Conference, Msgr. Devine said: “The pressures exerted on our communications service in recent weeks have been enormous, as you may imagine. It is only with your support that we can continue to ensure this service that is so important for the media in Scotland and beyond. I appeal to your financial support for this work and I ask you to give with generosity today so that it may continue in the future”.
