Towards terrestrial digital broadcasting” “

The European Union has formalized its own position on the technological debate on radio and television broadcasting. With a Communication presented at the end of May on the acceleration of transition to digital broadcasting, the Commission has formally invited member states to terminate “analogical” radio and television transmissions at the latest by 2012, taking note of the dates communicated by the competent national Authorities for so-called “transition to digital”. According to the Commissioner for the Information Society and the Media, Mrs Viviane Reding, “pan-European digital coordination will permit our citizens to gain access to new services that combine those of mobile phones and radio and television broadcasting”. The content of the Communication –(ttp://www.europa.eu.int/information_society/topics/ecomm/doc/useful_information/library/communic_reports/switchover/com_2005_0204_f_fr_acte.pdf)- will be discussed in Brussels in the course of a round table on 24 June, dedicated more generally to issues of digital communication and the new information technologies.
