Special session of the Bishops’ Assembly” “

The pilgrimage on 24 September to the Marian sanctuary of Brezje (diocese of Ljubljana), the tenth anniversary of the military police campaigns at Bljesak and Oljuja and the project for the church of Croatian martyrs at Udbina (its foundation stone will be laid on 9 September), were the main questions discussed by the Croatian Bishops’ Conference, which met in Zagreb in recent days for a special plenary assembly. Coordinated by Cardinal Josip Bozanic, president of the Croatian bishops, the session was also attended by the apostolic nuncio in the Republic of Croatia, Msgr. Francisco Javier Lozano, “a sign – said Bozanic – of the close links between the Church in Croatia and the Holy Father in Rome”. As regards the planned pilgrimage to the Marian sanctuary of Brezje, an organizing committee, chaired by the general secretary of the Croatian bishops, Msgr. Vjekoslav Huzjak, was set up; its members include a representative of each of the dioceses of Croatia. As regards the police campaigns in 1995, the bishops emphasized the importance of “objectivity and respect for the truth to prevent defeatism”, exhorted “the population to actively engage in the construction of their country”, and promised to pose the question anew to the attention of public opinion in the very near future.
