The great feast of Indulgence at Zemaiciu Kalvarija, the main Marian sanctuary of the diocese of Telsiai, began on 1st July and will continue to the 12th. Some 20,000 pilgrims are expected to visit the sanctuary during the celebrations. On 30th June, during a solemn ceremony, the miraculous and much-venerated image of Our Lady with the Infant Jesus was returned to the sanctuary after a restoration lasting two years. “Next year announced Bishop Jonas Boruta of Telsiai the image will be enriched by a crown donated by the Pope”. The tradition of the Feast of the Indulgence dates back to the 17th century, and the sanctuary that hosts it is celebrated throughout the country for its twenty chapels that also represent stations of the Cross.
