The European Commission has decreed 2007 European Year for equal opportunities for everyone. The initiative forms part of the Union’s general policy for the promotion of equality and the campaign against any form of discrimination. Four approaches have been identified to achieve these objectives: increasing awareness of the right of equality, stimulating a debate on the need for the participation of little-represented minorities in social and political life, recognising diversity, and promoting a greater culture of respect and tolerance. A budget of 13.6 million euros has been allocated to the pursuit of these ends.
