Prison chaplains in Spain call it “restorative justice”, or “humanized justice that respects the dignity of those who have taken the wrong turning in life, helps them to assume responsibility for their own errors, and encourages reparation to be made for the harm caused”: Bishop Vicente Jiménez Zamora of Osma-Soria, delegate for pastoral care in prison, speaks of this kind of justice in his letter of presentation of the 7th National Congress of the pastoral ministry in prisons, due to be held in Madrid on 16-18 September; the congresses are held every five years. Planned actions include promoting services of penal mediation and reconciliation in dioceses, reinforcing at the diocesan level the integration of prison chaplaincies with other church institutions, and putting into practice the message of John Paul II during the Jubilee of prison inmates.
