Archbishop Sigitas Tamkevicius is the new President of the Lithuanian Bishops’ Conference (LBC). Elected for the next three years during the LBC plenary session held at Telsiai in recent days, he succeeds Cardinal Audrys Backis, who has been appointed vice-president. Archbishop Tamkevicius will also head the episcopal Commission for Social Communication and the Council for Social Affairs, while Cardinal Backis will chair the Commission for Education and the Council for the Family. The bishops of Lithuania also approved the new programme for religious teaching in state schools, and decided to reorganize the Lithuanian Catechetical Centre and transfer it from Kaunas to Vilnius.
