He’s the first black archbishop of the Anglican Church of England. He’s called John Sentamu and has assumed the post of Archbishop of York, the most important see of the Church of England after Canterbury. Born in Uganda 56 years ago, Sentamu is the sixth of 13 children. He was for many years a militant in the campaign against violence and racism, and, over the last three years, has strongly opposed the war in Iraq. He settled in Great Britain in 1974, studied theology there and was ordained priest in 1979. He was bishop of Birmingham before succeeding David Hope in the prestigious see of York. “John said the archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams on the day of his enthronement in York has the capacity to persuade the Church of England that change is truly possible”.
