“A society creative of employment”: that will be the theme of the Portuguese Social Week, due to be held in Braga from 9 to 12 March 2006. The Portuguese Church, through its Commission of the laity and the family, now intends to re-launch this annual event with new methods and objectives. In the press conference presenting this year’s Social Week, held in Lisbon in recent days, Manuel Porto, chairman of the committee that coordinates the event, emphasised “the commitment of the Church to making its voice heard to help and solve the basic problem of unemployment”, not only through denunciation and criticism but also with concrete proposals for action. “We start out from the idea – explained Porto that everyone is responsible for the creation of employment and for the well-being of society”. Many academic contributions, testimonies and experiences will be presented to this year’s Social Week. The participants will include Cardinal Raffaele Martino, President of the Pontifical Council of Justice and Peace, Jacques Delors and Antonio Guterres.
