Episodes of random violence continue to be registered in Glasgow, in Scotland. The most recent incidents during which several cars were set alight have convinced the Archbishop of Glasgow Mario Conti to issue a communiqué in which the leader of the most important Catholic community in Scotland says he is “horrified by the level of intimidation my priests have to cope with”. “These men have offered their life to serve God and the communities of which they are pastors”, declared Archbishop Conti. “It is already worrying that some opportunistic thieves have targeted our priests, but that two elderly priests should be accosted in their presbyteries and threatened is an unacceptable fact in any civil society and cannot be tolerated”. The archbishop has also written to the police chief of Glasgow, Sir William Orr, asking that priests be given counselling on the best strategies to adopt to protect themselves from thieves and vandals.
