Cyprus: at the side of migrants” “

A brochure with spiritual guidance about how to live to the best the period of Lent and prepare ourselves “worthily” to celebrate Easter: that’s the initiative promoted for Lent by Father Umberto Barato, Latin vicar of Nicosia. “In my parish – he says – I am promoting meetings especially on Sunday, the day on which the faithful, the majority of them women who work as domestics, have a day off work and are able to dedicate time to prayer. Prayer, penance and reading of the Bible are the main priorities proposed to the reflection of Christians in Cyprus. In particular, the Wednesdays of Lent are being dedicated to the reading and study of the Bible”. As for the actions of charity, Father Barato explains: “charity is a field in which we are involved throughout the year. In our social centre of St. Joseph we provide aid and hospitality to migrants. We also have an NGO through which we defend the rights of many refugees. We are registering a growth of migrants from Africa, in particular from Cameroon, who arrive in Cyprus in the search of work and stability. Our Lent is also devoted to meeting these people, listening to them and assisting them”.
