The “Pastoral Letter for Lent 2006” written by the Archbishop of Luxembourg Fernand Franck, under the title “Return to the fount: water is life”, is focused on the sacrament of baptism. The archbishop recalls the pastoral project “DraiSchrett” (Three Steps), with which the Church of Luxembourg invites the Catholics of the country to return to the fount of their faith, and to deepen for the next three years the three sacraments that lie at the origin of the Christian life: Baptism, the Eucharist and Confirmation. In the pastoral project, the sacraments are placed in relation to the elements of nature: water for Baptism; earth for the Eucharist; fire and wind for Confirmation. “Our life of faith writes Archbishop Franck begins with Baptism. But faith forms part of a process of growth”, which requires us also to bear witness to our Christian identity in the world: it asks us “what does it mean for us to live under the sign of baptism?”. “Living by the sacrament we received from the baptismal font writes Msgr Frank means living for God and for life”. It is in the light of this choice that Christians “dedicate themselves to human life in all its phases, including the phase of life in the womb and the life signed by illness and weakness”.
