The General Directorate for the Economy and Finance of the European Commission has published its latest report on business climate in the European Union for the month of February 2006. So-called “economic sentiment” reflects the overall economic activity of the Union, combining evaluations, expectations and analyses obtained from surveys of consumer associations and businesses (industries, services, building and commerce). The document, available on the Commission website, indicates a clear improvement in the confidence of citizens and the business system in the EU economy: the growth in confidence uninterrupted for several months now is due especially to sectors of industry (the so-called Business Climate Indicator has in fact reached the highest levels of the last five years) and retailing trade, in which consumers place a very high level of confidence. Poland, the UK, Germany and Italy are the countries where the improvement in confidence is most marked, in contrast to Spain where confidence has been in constant decline over the past year.
