European Consumers Day” “

With the contribution of the Austrian Presidency of the EU and the Economic and Social Committee, the eighth European Consumers Day was celebrated throughout Europe on 15 March. Ever since 1999 – on the initiative of the said Committee – the Day has been the European corollary of the World Consumers Day promoted by the UNO since the late 1960s. The clou of the day’s events was the round table held in Vienna on the theme “Education of Consumers”, whose main objective was to “identify the best practices in terms of the education of consumers and define the paths to follow in the years to come”. Attended by many representatives of civil society and consumers’ associations, the meeting provided a forum to debate past experiences and current measures relating to the awareness-raising of consumers, education in consumption and such fundamental rights as right to safety, right to be informed, right of choice and the right to be heard.
