Hungary: Cardinal Erdo at Venice for St. Mark

This year Cardinal Peter Erdo, Archbishop of Budapest and Primate of Hungary, presided over the eucharistic celebration in the cathedral of Venice on 25 April, on the occasion of the feast of St. Mark the Evangelist, patron of Venice and of the Venetian people. The concelebrants – in the presence of representatives of the ecclesial communities and civic authorities – included the Patriarch of Venice, Cardinal Angelo Scola, and the retired Patriarch, Cardinal Marco Cè. On the following day, 26 April, Cardinal Erdo gave the prolusion at the “Dies Academicus” of the Studium Generale Marcianum. The ceremony of inauguration of the new academic year of the Marcianum was opened with a report of the President, Msgr. Gianni Bernardi, and an intervention by Cardinal Scola, followed by the prolusion of Cardinal Erdo on the theme: “Internal tribunal and external tribunal in canon law”. Cardinal Erdo is 53 years old; created cardinal by John Paul II on 21 October 2003, he is in fact the youngest member of the Sacred College. He has been Archbishop of Budapest and Primate of Hungary since December 2002. He became President of the Hungarian Bishops’ Conference in September 2005.
