The 59th International Cannes Film Festival is not all stardust and prizes. The “European Charter of films online“, launched by the Commission and signed by eighteen European and US companies and organizations representing the film industry, internet service providers and telecommunications operators, has now been approved. The first document of its kind in the world, the Charter “identifies four fundamental elements necessary for the diffusion of films online : a wide online supply of interesting films; the facility of use of online services for consumers; suitable safeguards for works protected by copyright; and close liaison to crack down on piracy”. According to the European Commissioner for the Information Society and the Media, Viviane Reding, “ online services will greatly facilitate access to the European cinema and its circulation both within the European Union and on world markets”. a target=’_blanck’ href=http://ec.europa.eu/comm/acpolicy/other_actions/content_online/index_en.htmhttp://ec.europa.eu/comm/acpolicy/other_actions/content_online/index_en.htm
