Cardinal Joachim Meisner, archbishop of Cologne, will take part in the annual pilgrimage to the Marian sanctuary of Einsieldeln (Switzerland) on 17 July. The pilgrimage is promoted by “Aid to the Suffering Church”, an international Catholic charity involved for over half a century in supporting persecuted Christians in the world (www.kirche-in-not.ch). After his participation in a morning debate on the theme “Universal Church in the process of change?”, which will open the day in the village of Einsieldeln, Cardinal Meisner will preside over a solemn eucharistic celebration with the pilgrims in the church of the local Benedictine abbey, in the early afternoon. The concelebrants will include the abbot Martin Werlen, the general secretary of the Swiss Bishops’ Conference Agnell Rickenmann, and the vicar general of the diocese of Bâle, Father Roland-B. Trauffer.
