Greater Eu commitment to refugees in Kenya

“Increasing the settlement of refugees in countries of the European Union”: that’s the conclusion reached by a delegation of six representatives of the Commission for Migrants in Europe (Ccme), which works within the Conference of European Churches (Cec), after a recent visit to the camp at Dadaab (Kenya) where some 130,000 refugees, in large part Somalis, are living. “Current instability and conflicts – says the CCME – make it impossible for them to return to their homelands. Pending an improvement of the difficult situation, to be hoped for in the short term, the only possible solution seems that of settling these refugees in third countries. The Usa is the only country that has so far accepted a significant number of refugees within its borders”. The Ccme has invited the countries of the European Union to follow suit. “There is an urgent need for action, something needs to be done and on a substantial scale”. At the present time the UN Agency for Refugees, Unhcr, is identifying those refugees in the Kenyan camp with disabilities, survivors of torture and violence, and those most vulnerable to prejudice and exposed to violence and abuse. “It is matter of humanity to bring these people out of the Dabaab camp”, declare the six representatives of the Ccme. A detailed report of this visit will be presented at a final conference held in Brussels from 3 to 5 July.
