Italy: master’s degree on Bible and European culture

“Displaying detailed knowledge of the influence exerted by the Bible and the study of biblical texts on the formation of European culture”: that’s the objective of the Italy’s first post-graduate degree on “Bible and European culture. Biblical texts as source of philosophic and theological thought, literature and art”. Organized by the Faculty of letters and philosophy of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, in collaboration with the Theological Faculty of Northern Italy and the Higher Institute of Religious Sciences in Milan, the course has a two-year duration for an overall 60 university credits, equivalent to 1,500 hours of class-work. Knowledge of the influence of the Bible on European culture, through the analysis of “significant themes and moments in the history of our civilization, from the last centuries of the ancient world to the contemporary period” – explain the promoters of the course – enables students to “deepen their understanding of the interlacing and development of theological reflection, philosophic thought and literary and artistic production in the West”. The master’s degree is therefore aimed at “responding to the needs of high professional qualification of those who work, or who intend to work, in cultural, educational, and artistic institutions, or institutions for the management of cultural properties, by fostering the necessary skills to appreciate the biblical roots of European culture in an interdisciplinary perspective and understand the questions raised by the meeting between different cultures and religions”. The two-year degree course is targeted at graduate teachers working in lower and upper secondary schools; those with teacher-training qualifications from Schools of Specialization for secondary teaching; and graduates with a four-year degree course or specialized degree in philosophy, humanities, historical sciences, and cultural heritage conservation sciences. Applications should be lodged no later than 9 October 2006. For further info: www.unicatt.it/masteruniversitario.
