The Hungarian bishops have lent their support to the statements of two Slovak bishops who have raised their voices against recent anti-Hungarian demonstrations in Slovakia – reports the Hungarian Catholic press agency Magyar Kurir – and have reiterated their “absolute condemnation of any type of demonstration that incites hatred and violates the dignity of nations”. “Hatred can only lead to hatred – they affirm – and a solution can only be found with mutual benevolence”. The Hungarian and Slovak bishops signed a joint declaration on 29 June in which they “forgive and ask for forgiveness” for past events. “We hope that the two nations and their leaders – conclude the Hungarian bishops – will choose this path because it is the peace of hearts that leads to true reconciliation”.
