With the formal approval of the so-called mid-term examination of the implementation of its programme of work for 2006 (and the presentation of its main realizations from January to the present time), the Barroso Commission has also reaffirmed the political priorities that Brussels intends to pursue during the second half of the year. If, on the one hand, the classic priority actions are confirmed (in the sector of financial and budgetary perspectives 2207-2013, of the reinforced programme for growth and employment, of efforts to crack down on clandestine immigration, of the reform of the services sector and of energy policy), on the other, the Commission has decided to “adapt its own programme of work to take into account the needs of citizens”. In particular, the following priorities have been added: reinforcement of the “Project for Citizens” of May 2006, modernization of universities, reinforcement of security, protection of critical infrastructures, clean and safe environment, policy of innovation, improvement and simplification of legislation, defence of commercial activities.
