The Day of Christian Media and Culture was celebrated in Belgium on 24 September. In a message issued for the occasion, Cardinal Godfried Danneels recalled “the magnificent role that the media can play in society. A means of communication, of exchanges full of messages transmitted in all directions, the media can truly influence our culture. Surveys are a confirmation of this”. As regards Christians, continues the cardinal, “they must be careful to inform themselves, reflect and act in conformity with their faith and their service in civil life and in the church”. During the Day a collection was held for funds to support the Church’s media. These include the Sunday paper Dimanche and Belgian Catholic radio and television (RTCB) which are both celebrating their 60th anniversary this year. A meeting will be held at Ottignies on 21 October to mark the anniversary, during which the first award of the annual “Dimanche-RTCB” Prize will be presented. The evening will be enlivened by a performance by the clown Paolo Doss.
