Disinformation, lowering of the guard, Eastern European youth at risk: these are the findings that emerge from a recent survey conducted by Eurobarometer on Aids/HIV, on the level of awareness of its risk among the EU population and how they behave in relation to the epidemic. The risks are there, in spite of the good general awareness among Europeans of “one of the prime causes of preventable death in the world”. Commenting on the results of the Eurobarometer survey, the Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection Markos Kyprianou stressed the need to provide youth with all the necessary information for a “sound evaluation of the risk to which they are exposed”. From a point of view of public health, Eurobarometer has further pointed out the need to improve information within the new EU member states that “border on countries where the epidemic is advancing” and “where the epidemic remains strong”.
