Our neighbours

The relations of Europeans with their neighbouring countries and peoples are the focus of the last special report of Eurobarometer dedicated to “European neighbourhood policy”. The survey confirms some by now consolidated data: 68% of EU citizens see relations with neighbouring countries in a positive light and are convinced that cooperation in some key sectors (fight against organized crime, terrorism, development, energy, environment, democracy, education and training, research and innovation) is mutually beneficial. As regards the question of immigration, 64% of those interviewed believe the reduction of clandestine influxes can only be achieved by close collaboration between the Union and the countries of origin. Eurobarometer has however registered at least three negative data, which are translated into “fears” of the population of the EU: the fear lest national and EU stability be jeopardized by the promotion of reforms in the neighbouring countries (45%); the fear of the too high cost of development policy for the coffers of the EU (85%); and the fear that immigration and criminality will increase, unless we limit relations with our neighbours that fail to cooperate (64%).
