Sedentary lifestyle and food, threats to health

Obesity, sedentariness, excessive and unhealthy diet: the health of Europeans is threatened by the superabundance of food and a sedentary lifestyle, reports a survey conducted by Eurobarometer, published in recent days and commented on by the Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection Markos Kyprianou. “The majority of Europeans consider themselves in a good state of health – says the report -. But 38% of interviewees declare” they are overweight and “95% regard obesity as a threat to health”. Kyprianou acknowledges that most Europeans “indicate a solution in their willingness to change their own lifestyle”, but they also think “the public authorities, including the EU, have an essential role to play in combating obesity” and its consequences. Among solutions to improve diet and health, the Europeans indicate the intention “to eat more fruit and vegetables and less fatty foods”. On the other hand only 30% of citizens say they “perform any regular physical activity”. Moreover, “nine persons out of ten consider that advertising influences children in their choice” of food and drink.
