France: Semaines Sociales

“How can we make our country more just and restore to it the necessary impetus to effectively conduct” the fight against injustices “in Europe and in the world?”. This, explains Michel Camdessus, president of the Semaines Sociales de France (SSF) – the annual Catholic week of debate on social issues in France – is the fundamental question round which will revolve the 81st session of the SSF due to take place at Paris-La Défense from 24 to 26 November on the theme “What is a just society?”. “Injustice is evident and rampant everywhere – explains Camdessus -: it is one of the key problems of our society” to which we need to find answers “starting out from an objective analysis of its scale, mechanisms and the lack of institutional rules on which it is based”. According to Camdessus, the question is more than ever relevant in the period “between our last meeting and the presidential elections next spring”. The departure point will be “reflections and proposals already formulated by the participants and, in particular, by our regional antennae (lay associations forming a network through the territory that maintain contacts with the SSF and periodically meet with its Council). Economists, philosophers, sociologists, theologians and other exponents of culture will meet during the SSF to discuss the issues of injustice (conferences and debates). The SSF will be concluded, on the afternoon of Sunday 26, with a eucharistic celebration officiated by Bishop Gérard Daucourt of Nanterre.
