“Unacceptable discrimination” against the church institutions: this was stated by the Hungarian Bishops in a statement about the balance sheet for 2005. The Catholic Church had asked the Finance Ministry for an interview (before adoption at Parliament) about the part of the 2007 budget that concerns the Churches as well as on the additional contribution to the Churches that had been covered by the 2005 balance sheet. Parliament – writes the Catholic agency Magyar Kurir – adopted, instead, the balance sheet for 2005 with the content disputed by the Bishops and without the requested interview. The adopted figures, they claim, “are discriminatory for the educational, social and cultural institutions run by the Church”. “We disapprove of the fact the Government of the Republic of Hungary failed to fulfil its obligations under the international agreement signed with the Holy See – reads the release -. We deem it natural that general financial restrictions may be necessary, also in the area of the church institutions, but we think a discriminatory attitude towards our church institutions is unacceptable”.
