Cec: steps in Middle East

Steps have been taken to promote the relationship between Middle East and European Churches. A delegation from the Conference of the European Churches (Cec) – led by the Rev. Jean-Arnold de Clermont (France), President of Cec – visited Beirut, Lebanon from 9-12 January and met with representatives of the Middle East Council of Churches (Mecc); in the programme it was scheduled also other meetings with Christian and Muslim leaders from the region. “We have met key people in the life of both Christian and Muslim communities in Lebanon. All have recognised the role which Cec can play in enabling the voice of the Middle East Churches to be heard in Europe as they work for reconciliation and just peace in the region”, stated the Venerable Colin Williams, General Secretary of Cec, “We have identified areas in which the two organisations can work together to support each other”. The Conference of the European Churches (Cec) is a fellowship of some 125 Orthodox, Protestant, Anglican and Old Catholic Churches from all countries of Europe.
