CEC and CCEE: the third stage towards EEA3

“The light of Christ shines upon all. Rediscovering the gift of light that the Gospel of Christ represents for Europe today”: that’s the theme of the meeting due to be held in Wittenberg-Lutherstadt, in Germany, from 15 to 18 February. It will be attended by 150 delegates of the Conference of European Churches (CEC/KEK, a network of 125 Orthodox, Protestant, Anglican and Old Catholic Churches in all the countries of Europe, plus 40 affiliated organizations) and of the Council of the Bishops’ Conferences of Europe (CCEE). During the meeting, which forms the third stage (after the first meeting in Rome in January 2006 and subsequent meetings at the local, regional or national level) of the process leading to the Third European Ecumenical Assembly (AEE3) scheduled to be held in Sibiu (Romania) in September, the results of the previous meetings will be summed up. After ecumenical prayers in the cathedral, the Wittenberg meeting will be opened by the CEC and CCEE Presidents, respectively Pastor Arnold de Clermont and Cardinal Pèter Erdö. This will be followed by welcoming addresses by Bishops Wolfang Huber, chairman of the Council of the German Evangelical Church (EKD); Walter Klaiber, chairman of the Community of Work of the Christian Churches (ACK); and Gerhard Feige, of the German Bishops’ Conference. On the following day, 16 February, the delegates will meet with the representatives of the Churches and civil society; the German Federal President Horst Köhler will also address the delegates. A round table on the challenges of EU enlargement is planned for Saturday, 17 February. For further information: www.eea3.org
