Access to scientific information

A pan-European Conference on scientific information in the digital era was held in Brussels on 15-16 February. Convened by the European Commission, it coincided with the presentation of a Communication of political nature analysing “the ways in which the new digital technologies could be used to improve access to scientific publications and data, and promote innovation within an increasingly knowledge-based European economy”. In their closing remarks, the European Commissioners for the Information Society and the Media Viviane Reding and for Research Janez Potocnik stressed that “new ideas are often born from previous research; that is why the new strategy of the Community must be to define the parameters to permit Europe to exploit to the best the excellent work of previous researchers”.
