The Council of Laity of the archdiocese of Madrid has denounced “the lack of neutrality of the Spanish State on religious questions” and “the imposition of the new school subject called ‘Education in citizenship'”. This school subject – decided on by the Zapatero government – is, says the Council, an “inadmissible imposition” and “a flagrant violation of the rights recognized in our Constitution of 1978”. The creation of the new subject would leave “Catholic religion and morality without parity as an academic alternative”. The new subject – that introduces, according to the Church, a distorted view of the human person – is seen as “a compulsory imposition of contents” that “violate a fundamental right of parents recognized by the Constitution: that of choosing the religious and moral education for their children in conformity with their beliefs”.
