In memory of the victims of the Shoah

On 15 April, on the day of the memory of the Shoah (Yom ha Shoah), thousands of Jewish youth from all over the world visited the Nazi death camps at Auschwitz and Birkenau. The Israeli Minister of Education, Yuli Tamir, also took part in the celebrations. The participants in the ceremony, including some survivors of the Holocaust, walked the three kilometres from the gates of Auschwitz with the slogan “Arbeit Macht Frei” to the concentration camp of Birkenau. A brief ceremony of commemoration of the victims took place before the ruins of the gas chambers at Birkenau; the Kaddish, prayer for the dead, was recited. The “march of the living” was organized for the first time in 1988.
