Margaret Chan, new General Director of the World Health Organization (WHO), and the regional WHO Director for Europe Marc Danzon had a meeting with the President of the Commission José Manuel Barroso and EU Commissioners Markos Kyprianou (Health) and Janez Potocnik (Research) in Brussels on Tuesday 12 June to discuss the reinforcement of EU-WHO cooperation in the field of health. In particular, the meeting provided an opportunity to examine issues linked to the consequences of climate change on human health, food safety in the world and the improvement of the level of healthcare in Africa. With a view to evaluating cooperation at the political, technical and financial level, the delegations of the two institutions, in the course of seven thematic meetings, have also discussed such questions as the application of the anti-smoking framework convention, health in Europe and in neighbouring countries, the new EU strategy for health, healthcare on line, development policy in Africa and migration of manpower, and the reform of the system of humanitarian aid
