Poland: “let us not lose our own Christian roots”

“The cultural and technological leap forward we have been witnessing in Poland since 1989 has opened great opportunities to Polish youth. Thanks to the education they have received, their knowledge of foreign languages, the chance to travel abroad and numerous contacts with the inhabitants of other countries, especially in the EU, Polish youth can rediscover their place among the representatives of other cultures and nationalities. These opportunities however also lead to many dangers. In a new reality, from a technological and cultural point of view, today’s youth run the risk of losing the sense of genuine and objective values. They are consequently often led to forget their own roots, to squander their own Christian identity, as members of the Catholic Church and as Poles”, warn the bishop of Poland in their “Declaration on Youth”, approved during their 340th plenary session held at Kamien Slaski from 15-17 June. Announcing the forthcoming publication of a pastoral letter to youth, the bishops say that “those who seek their place in life especially have a need to be supported by their families and by wise persons who are able to indicate to them the meaning of life, and encourage them to undertake the difficult journey of education”.
