“This letter is most welcome”, was the reply of the World Council of Churches (WCC) to the document “A Common Word between Us and You” sent two weeks ago by 138 Moslem personalities to high officials of the Christian world, starting from Pope Benedict XVI. WCC Secretary General Samuel Kobia highlighted the unprecedented cooperative tone of the appeal to dialogue coming from the Muslim world. Among the signers of letter: the Great Muftis of Egypt, Palestine, Oman, Jordan, Syria, Bosnia and Russia, as well as numerous imams together with Sunnite, Shiite and Sufi scholars from the five continents. The WCC welcomed the invitation to dialogue and pointed out that “such a rare unity of purpose gives great hope as to what people of faith can achieve together.”
