Regions: EU immigration policy

The role of Cities and Regions in immigration flow management is the title of the Seminar held at the end of October in Tenerife within the framework of the seating of the Constitutional Affairs Commission of the Regional Committee of the European Union, during which the Regional Committee president Michel Delabarre urged Brussels’ institutions and Member State governments to implements “a real and true community policy of immigration that is not limited to the definition of a legal and legislative framework”. Mr. Delabarre affirmed that responding to the urgency is no longer sufficient. It is necessary to fully involve local bodies in matters relating to legal and clandestine immigration with the purpose of “planning, preventing and managing migration flows at their very origin with a supportive, co-responsible and concerted response including all territories, the major points of immigration such as frontier regions, borders and the Countries of origin”. The Regional Committee announced the presentation of a proposal to the Council, to the Commission and to the European Parliament for the “creation of a specific financial tool that would take into account local needs together with the definition of common regularization rules”.
