On Wednesday November 7, at the General Audience in Saint Peter’s Square Pope Benedict XVI met with Archbishop Innocent of Chersonèse, ordinary of the parishes of Moscow’s patriarchates in Western Europe. The archbishop donated to the Pope the French translation of the recently-issued “Foundations of social doctrine” by the Russian Orthodox Church together with the latest issue of the “Messenger of the Russian Orthodox Church”, dedicated to the recent visit of Patriarch Alexis II of Moscow. The news was released today in the French language Orthodox news information service “Orthodoxie” which reiterates a communiqué by the Russian Orthodox Church in Western Europe. “The Pope asked Archbishop Innocent to convey his greetings to Patriach Alexis and expressed the wish that the French publication of the Social Doctrine of the Russian Orthodox Church may contribute to the common proclamation of faith to Orthodox and Catholics and to the common testimony of the values of the Gospel. Last Wednesday, the Orthodox Archbishop was also received by His Eminence Cardinal Walter Kasper, president of the Pontifical Council for Christian Unity.
