Romania: a campaign against the trade in women ” “

The World Organization for Migrations (WOM) has announced a new campaign against the trade in women in Romania. The WOM in Bucharest has signed an agreement with the Romanian Minister of Education and Research to launch a campaign in secondary schools and colleges throughout the country. The studies conducted by the WOM suggest that the potential victims of this trade mainly come from the poor regions: 39% from the Province of Moldavia, 35% from the south (Muntenia), 21% from Transylvania and only 5% from the capital (Bucharest). Observers confirm that the girls placed in state structures, such as orphanages, have a higher probability of being caught up in the trade, especially if they have suffered abuse in the past. In conducting its campaign, the WOM is counting on the support of the various state ministries, the NGOs and especially the women’s organizations and the Romanian Orthodox Church. Romania is one of the most important countries of origin of the victims of the trade and also represents one of the main transit routes towards the Balkans. This new stage in the campaign will be accompanied by a television spot, transmitted by Prima TV, a private network which broadcasts throughout the country, and by a poster campaign in the various towns.
