“Invent new forms of solidarity”: that’s the invitation addressed to believers by Msgr. Benito Cocchi, president of Italian Caritas, on opening the 28th National Meeting of the 223 diocesan Caritas associations. Under the title “Along the roads of daily life”, the meeting was held in recent days at Bellaria (Rimini) and attended by over 600 representatives. The witness of charity challenges the whole of Europe to respond to the phenomenon of immigration. In the view of Fr. Paolo Perego, head of the national area of Italian Caritas , “immigration appeals to the Christian communities to find new responses, in collaboration with the institutions”. Caritas, he said, must help to alleviate the growing social conflict and “help people who are illegally in our territory to cope with their immediate and essential needs but always trying to help and accompany them, in the forms recognized by the law, to overcome their situation of illegality”.
