The joint working group of the Catholic Church and the World Council of Churches met at Stjarnholm, in Sweden, from 24 to 31 May, under the chairmanship of its two “co-moderators”, the Catholic archbishop of Glasgow, Mario Conti, and the Lutheran bishop Jonas Jonson. In the course of the work, the representatives of the Churches shared moments of exchange and reflection on the international situation that has been created after September 11 and following the deterioration of the Middle Eastern conflict. Part of the work was devoted to the examination of interconfessional marriages that “involve as the final communiqué notes – an ever growing number of Christians”. The Churches agreed on the need to study more exhaustively the ecumenical role of interconfessional families and the implications of marriages between partners of different traditions.
