The new chairman of the “Church and Society” Commission of the Conference of the European Churches (KEK) is pastor Ruediger Noll, a well-known figure in ecumenical circles thanks to his role as co-secretary and organizer of the Ecumenical Assembly in Graz in 2001. He was nominated by KEK’s central Committee at its annual meeting, being held at Morges (Switzerland) from 5 to 9 June. The Committee also reconfirmed the English Baptist pastor Keith Clements in the post of secretary general for another five-year term. “It’s a very important meeting declared Clements to SirEurope because it is being held in preparation for the forthcoming 12th general assembly of KEK planned to be held in Norway in June next year. We defined KEK’s programme of work and its priorities, especially with a view to a contribution of the Churches to the future of the EU”. One of our main concerns said Clements is that after September 11 the campaign against terrorism be not conducted in such a way as to contravene the rights of immigrants, on the pretext of security”. The KEK is also questioning itself “about how to continue in the process of the reception of the ecumenical Charter, and how it may contribute to reviving dialogue between the Churches in Europe”.
