“We hope that it may be useful for the formation of an opinion and for the formulation of guidelines on the question of euthanasia”: so said Cardinal Adrian Simonis, president of the Dutch Bishops’ Conference, in presenting the English edition of the collection of documents, pastoral letters, correspondence, press releases, official statements and declarations on the question of euthanasia with the title “Euthanasia and human dignity”. The book is aimed at offering a contribution at the world level that it why it was translated into English on the occasion of the entry into force of the law that legalized euthanasia in the Netherlands on 1st April 2002. The contributions of Catholics to the debate in the Netherlands “have become, in effect, a counter-movement to the tendency to legalise euthanasia”, writes Msgr. W. Eijk in his foreword to the book.
