Greater “attention to the voluntary choice of families”, more “dignity” for the discipline of religious education in schools, more commitment to the “requalification” of teachers: these, in short, are the main requests made by Catholic teachers of religion in Italy to the world of education and the process of reform now underway. The occasion for their appeal was the national refresher course held in Sardinia in recent days, on the initiative of the Italian Episcopal Conference; some 250 teachers from all the dioceses of Italy participated in it. The meeting concluded with a letter, signed by the teachers, asking the government for “a speedy launch of the parliamentary process” relating to the approval of the bill on the juridical status of teachers of religion.
