The summit between the EU and Russia in Brussels on 11 November went better than expected. In spite of tensions on the eve of the summit, European Union and Russia reached broad agreement on many of the points on the agenda. The sole question on which Russian president Vladimir Putin showed no willingness to reach a compromise concerns the situation in Chechnya. As regards the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad surrounded by Lithuanian and Polish territories, a compromise was signed that leaves both sides satisfied: “flexible” controls on the frontiers by Lithuania, provision of special transit permits for Russian citizens, examination of a project that envisages the construction of a high-speed railway line connecting Kaliningrad with the Russian Federation without intermediate stations. ———————————————————————————————————– Sir Europa (English) N.ro assoluto : 53 N.ro relativo : 41 Data pubblicazione : 15/11/2002
