An appeal to the Greek government, which will take over the revolving presidency of the EU in January 2003, to do everything possible to guarantee the right of immigrants to be joined by members of their families has been made by His Beatitude Christodoulos, Orthodox archbishop of Athens and all Greece. The Archbishop was addressing the 15th general Assembly of the Commission of the Churches for migrants in Europe (a body linked to KEK) which was held in Athens on 1st November. “For us in the Church said the archbishop directly addressing the Greek minister of the interior, Costantinos Scandilidis the family has a central significance because it is the cradle of life”. The Churches and church bodies that work to protect the rights of immigrants and refugees are very active on this front also at the European level. “A great responsibility said Christodoulos weighs on the legislator whenever he has to do with children and decide, for example, whether a minor has to wait five years, a quarter of his childhood, before being able to rejoin his family”.
