The Christian Churches say no to any military attack against Iraq and appeal to Bagdad to respect the UN resolutions and permit the weapons inspectors to enter the country. Meeting in Geneva, the WCC’s central committee endorsed the joint letter written by the Churches of the USA, Canada and the United Kingdom to ask the governments of Washington and London that “ no measure be taken against Saddam Hussein” because “it would not be in conformity with the resolutions of the UN’s Security Council“. The Lutheran World Federation has also taken a similar stance. The Federation’s general secretary, Ishmael Noko, asked the British government to pay heed to the misgivings that a military strike against Iraq has aroused in British public opinion and in many sectors of the international community. “Such a conflict writes Noko would not contribute in any way to the re-establishment of a just peace in the Middle East. On the contrary, it would only exacerbate hatred, suspicion and the desire for revenge”.
