Women as the victims of domestic violence, sexual abuse and prostitution: that was the theme of a consultation promoted by the Conference of the European Churches held at Cartigny, in Switzerland from 26 to 30 June, in the presence of 22 women from 14 European countries, representing the various Christian Churches (members of KEK) and women’s organizations. The participants discussed experiences of discrimination, abuse and violence against women in Europe today and evaluated how to act at the political and social level, and in a European context, to stem such abuses. Discussion also focused on prostitution and the blackmarket that this exploitation has opened up in central and eastern Europe. “In the search for economic survival says the final communiqué a large number of women have fallen into the trap of unscrupulous traffickers. They are taken to the West or to the wealthier countries of Asia, with promises of gainful employment, and then forced to prostitute themselves. The development of this market adds KEK requires solidarity and action at various levels, beginning with a work of prevention among its possible victims and assistance to those who have already fallen into the trap”.
