God and Europe? ” “

The Colloquium “God and Europe? Religious freedom and political freedom in the founding treaties of the new Europe” was held in Brussels, at the headquarters of the European Parliament on 3 April. Promoted by the Foundation for political service, by the Convention of Christians for Europe (CCE) and by a group of eleven Catholic MEPs, the meeting was aimed at expressing the views of the Churches and civil society in the consultations on the future of Europe. With regard to the absence “of any reference to God and to the rights of the Churches and religious communities” in the draft constitutional treaty published by the Convention on the future of Europe on 6 February, the CCE has asked “that explicit reference be made in the future European Constitution to religion and to the religious freedom of each European citizen, to the role and freedom of the organizations of the Churches and religious communities, not as the claim for particular privileges, but as a guarantee of the liberty of everyone”. Today – concludes the CCE – “the immediate objective is to promote the mobilization of all European citizens and to formulate political proposals aimed both at the individual states, and at the European Convention and its follow-up intergovernmental Conference, which will have the job of promulgating the Constitution”. To this end a new Conference at the European level has been scheduled for next autumn. ———————————————————————————————————– Sir Europa (English) N.ro assoluto : 1195 N.ro relativo : 25 Data pubblicazione : 04/04/2003
