The new Moderator of the Church of Scotland is to be a woman. She is Dr. Alison Elliot, a 54-year-old Protestant minister and lecturer at the University of Edinburgh. The first woman ever to be elected to this post, she will assume her new duties in May 2004, on the occasion of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, which has some 600,000 members.
